Abstract:
A distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) experiment was undertaken at SkyTrain Ice Rise in the Weddell Sea Sector of West Antarctica. The aim was to evaluate the use of DAS technology using existing infrastructure and for delineating the englacial fabric to improve our understanding of ice sheet history in the region. Three walkaway profiles were acquired at 45 degree intervals using a hammer and plate source. Both direct and reflected P- and S-wave energy, as well as surface wave energy, are observed using a range of source offsets recorded using fibre optic cable. Significant noise results from the cable hanging untethered in the borehole. At greater depth, where drilling fluid is present, signal strength is sufficient to measure seismic interval velocities and attenuation.

Abstract:
We use polarimetric radar sounding to investigate variation in ice crystal orientation fabric within the near-surface (top 40-300 m) of Rutford Ice Stream, West Antarctica. To assess the influence of the fabric on ice flow, we use an analytical model to derive anisotropic enhancements of the flow law from the fabric measurements. In the shallowest ice (40-100 m) the azimuthal fabric orientation is consistent with flow-induced development and correlates with the surface strain field. Notably, toward the ice-stream margins, both the horizontal compression angle and fabric orientation tend toward 45 degrees relative to ice flow. This result is consistent with theoretical predictions of flow-induced fabric under simple shear, but to our knowledge has never been observed. The fabric orientation in deeper ice (100-300 m) is significantly misaligned with shallower ice in some locations, and therefore inconsistent with the local surface strain field. This result represents a new challenge for ice flow models which typically infer basal properties from the surface conditions assuming simplified vertical variation of ice flow. Our technique retrieves azimuthal variations in fabric but is insensitive to vertical variation, and we therefore constrain the fabric and rheology within two end-members: a vertical girdle or a horizontal pole. Our hypotheses are that fabric near the center of the ice-stream tends to a vertical girdle that enhances horizontal compression, and near the ice-stream margins tends to a horizontal pole that enhances lateral shear.

Survey flying (using Basler BT-67 aircraft C-GJKB) was carried out between 1 May 2014 and 12 May 2014 to measure the ice thickness, surface elevation and magnetic anomaly of the Queen Elizabeth Islands, Nunavut, Canada. The primary radar instrument was the UTIG-JPL High-Capability Radar Sounder (HICARS: Peters et al., 2005). Level 1 radar data products are hosted at NSIDC. Surface elevation data was acquired by a fixed beam Riegl laser altimeter using a solid-state infrared lasar firing at 100 Hz. A tail boom-mounted cesium vapor total field magnetometer specially configured for the aircraft measured the magnetic anomaly.

SAR-processed two-dimensional radargram data in SEG-Y format acquired from the Institute and Moller ice streams, West Antarctica between mid-December 2010 and mid-January 2011. Data were collected using the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) Polarimetric radar Airborne Science Instrument (PASIN) radar, operated at a centre frequency of 150 MHz, and installed on the BAS Twin Otter aircraft "Bravo Lima". In total, ~25,000km of aerogeophysical data were collected, with coverage extending from the ice stream grounding zone to the ice divide. A high-resolution grid, with a line-spacing of 7.5 x 25 km, was acquired over the central parts of the ice stream catchments. Data were acquired during twenty-eight survey flights (sixteen flown from remote field camp C110, ten from Patriot Hills and two "transit" flights). Funding for this data acquisition was provided by the UK NERC AFI grant NE/G013071/1.

This data set contains bed and surface elevation picks derived from airborne radar collected during the WISE/ISODYN project. This collaborative UK/Italian project collected ~ 61000 line km of new aerogeophysical data during the 2005/2006 austral summer, over the previously poorly surveyed Wilkes subglacial basin, Dome C, George V Land and Northern Victoria Land.

Complete Antarctic contour dataset, split and labelled according to whether the contour represents an ice or rock surface. Data have been prepared from various map and remotely sensed datasets. Due to the differing sources, this dataset has inconsistent intervals between contour lines. The dataset has been generalised from the high resolution contour dataset in some areas. Further information regarding source and source data can be found within the high resolution attribute table. Certain inconsistencies and errors are currently known and a comprehensive update is planned for version 7.3.

A continuous contour dataset at 100 m intervals for all land south of 60degS, excluding the Balleny Islands. The vertical datum of the contours is EGM2008. Contours are extracted primarily from the PGC Reference Elevation Model of Antarctica (REMA) v1.1 with certain islands filled from Copernicus WorldDEM. Further small areas are interpreted from satellite imagery, and Peter I Oy contours are from the Norwegian Polar Institute. Sources of individual line segments are contained in the attribute table and full compilation information is given in the lineage statement.
Note: contours overlap the coastline in small areas, due to resolution of the data used in creation of the lines, and potential errors in coastline and/or contour data. Certain areas are known to contain erroneous data due to faults in the original DEM data.

These two files (.csv) provide independent methods of quantifying subglacial roughness in Greenland, both calculated from radio-echo sounding (or ice penetrating radar) data collected by the Operation Ice Bridge programme using CReSIS instrumentation. They are an output of the Basal Properties of Greenland (BPOG) project (http://bpog.blogs.ilrt.org/), with funding from NERC grant NE/M000869/1.
Roughness here, and in the wider literature, is defined as the variation in bed elevation (in the vertical) at the ice-bed interface, over a given length-scale. These two metrics calculate/quantify this variation in different ways: one shows topographic-scale roughness, calculated from the variation in along-track topography (bed elevation measurements derived from the radar pulse); and the other shows scattering-derived roughness, calculated from quantifying characteristics of each bed-echo (the return from the radar pulse at the ice-bed interface).
