Abstract:
An opportunistic marine mammal survey through the Atlantic Ocean between the UK and Antarctica was undertaken in November and December 2020. The RRS James Clark Ross, was used to transfer cargo and personnel for the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) from the UK to Rothera Research Station, Antarctica for the start of the 2020/2021 summer season. The transit and station relief included stops at King Edward Point and Bird Island, South Georgia, Falkland Islands and Signy Research Station, South Orkney Islands. The journey took a total of 48 days. Two JNCC marine mammal observers were on-board as well as other dedicated observers. Marine mammal observations were made as opportunistic sightings and recorded along with geographical position and other metadata. This transit and subsequent survey was unique in its passage as few vessels journey down the centre of the North and South Atlantic and continue on down the Western Antarctic Peninsula. British Antarctic Survey will continue to make this journey twice a year and it could provide a platform for an annual marine mammal survey of the entire Atlantic Ocean.

Abstract:
This dataset contains reflectance spectra measurements of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) that were sampled from the Scotia Sea in the Southern Ocean. Reflectance measurements were made on board on freshly caught krill, using a spectroradiometer. A number of these reflectance experiments were carried out across different regions of the Scotia Sea, on male, female and juvenile krill. Reflectance measurements are given for krill in both in situ and filtered seawater, as well as for water without krill. Data are presented in terms of remote sensing reflectance (Rrs).
Funding for the work was primarily through a bursary awarded to Anna Belcher from Antarctic Science Ltd. Additionally, funding from the BAS ecosystems programme supported the project. The Natural Environment Research Council Field Spectroscopy Facility (NERC FSF) loaned the equipment required to carry out this research.

Abstract:
Morphometric data were collected for 417 Calanus finmarchicus copepods (stage CV), swimming activity data were collected using locomotor activity monitors for 469 Calanus finmarchicus copepods (stage CV) and oxygen consumption activity data were collected using a Loligo microplate respirometry system for 40 Calanus finmarchicus copepods (stage CV). All data were collected in the Fram Strait, Arctic Ocean, from two stations (F7 and D6) in August 2019, coinciding with the timing of early diapause in this species. Photographs were taken and experiments were conducted onboard RRS James Clark Ross. The data are reported in detail in Grigor et al., Torpidity as an indicator of overwintering diapause in Calanus finmarchicus.
Funding was provided by the CHASE project (NE/R012733/1), part of the Changing Arctic Ocean (CAO) programme, jointly funded by the UKRI Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Protist taxonomy and abundance (in cells per L) from microscopy samples from the Kong Håkon VII Hav in the Southern Ocean. Samples were collected on an ecosystem cruise in March 2019. See Kauko et al. (in prep.) and [Kauko et al. (2021)](https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2021.623856) for more details.
The aim of the ECOgaps cruise was to improve our knowledgebase of the region's biological, chemical, and physical properties for the management of the King Haakon VII Sea from the coast of the Dronning Maud Land as part of CCAMLR's WSMPA Domain 4 planning. The focus of this cruise was on Astrid Ridge and Maud Rise. Work was divided into 7 packages:

In 2012 RRS James Clark Ross investigated the marine benthic biodiversity of the southern Weddell Sea (JR275), in 2016 the marine benthic biodiversity of the South Orkney Islands (JR15005) and in 2018 the marine benthic biodiversity of the Prince Gustav Channel area. In 2019 RV Polarstern investigated the marine benthic biodiversity of the eastern Antarctic Peninsula (PS119). During all expeditions macrobenthic isopod fauna (Peracarida, Crustacea) was collected by a total of 37 epibenthic sledge (EBS) and assessed for species richness and abundance. In total 27099 isopod specimens assigned to 228 morphospecies and 78 genera were identified. To set the isopod dataset into a wider context of species diversity, published isopod species richness data from a further EBS collected stations during the ANDEEP I-III expeditions (ANT XIX/2-3, ANT XXII-3) in the Weddell Sea (Brandt et al. 2007) were added.
This dataset provides data for 1) Isopoda EBS station locations and environmental data, 2) EBS Isopoda abundance data JR275, JR15005, JR17003a and PS118, 3) Isopoda species absence/presence data JR275, JR15005, JR17003a and PS118, 4) Isopoda species absence/presence data ANDEEP Weddell Sea only.

This dataset comprises chlorophyll-a and phaeopigment-a concentrations (mg l-1) obtained from seawater samples collected during cruise DY098 on the RRS Discovery during the period 2019-01-02 to 2019-02-10. The cruise was part of the POETS-WCB and SCOOBIES time-series with an additional survey undertaken around the South Sandwich Islands (SSI). The data contained within this dataset were predominantly collected during the SSI component of the cruise. Samples were collected at up to 6 depths across the top 400 m (approx. 5 m, 50 m, 100 m, 200 m, 400 m and the chlorophyll maximum). Samples were collected and filtered on board and analysed at the British Antarctic Survey laboratory.

Cetacean sightings in South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands waters, made by a team of four professional marine mammal observers during the British Antarctic Survey CCAMLR synoptic krill survey on the RRS Discovery (DY098), January and February 2019. The latitude and longitude of each sighting, the identified species, bearing and distance from the vessel, and estimated group size are provided. These data have been used by BAS to estimate (i) humpback whale and (ii) baleen whale abundance in South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands waters in 2019.

Abstract:
This is a physiological dataset for the Southern Patagonian limpet, Nacella deaurata. The limpets were collected from 2-6m depth in the Straits of Magellan near to Punta Arenas (53.164 S, 70.917 W) between Nov and the end of Jan 2018-19. A 2 month feeding experiment maintained N. deaurata at 1,4,8,11 and 14 degree Celsius for 2 months. Ingestion rate, absorption efficiency, absorption rate, oxygen consumption (uptake), scope for growth and mortality were measured. The thermal reaction norm for duration tenacity of field fresh subtidal and intertidal limpets, as well as subtidal limpets that were incubated at 8 degree Celsius for 2 months was investigated. The thermal reaction norm of radula scraping rates of field fresh limpets was measured.

Abstract:
Collection and preservation of open ocean water samples from stations along a transect in the Barents Sea over the course of a year from July 2017 - July 2018. Four cruises in total to cover seasonal changes, two on board the James Clark Ross (RRS) and two aboard the Helmer Hansen (RV). A standard CTD cast was deployed to collect the samples and depths were selected to support Primary Production experiments on board the ship, with deep samples representing 1 % PAR. Research assistants from SAMS (Scottish Association for Marine Science) were responsible for the sample collection and Elaine Mitchell of SAMS was responsible for the sample analysis and data processing.

Transcriptomic analyses were undertaken on both in situ collected and experimentally warmed blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) from Greenland. M. edulis were collected from the Godthabsfjorden near Nuuk, Greenland (64.45555, -51.14416) at the following locations and dates: Inner fjord (64.45941, -50.31030) on 11/06/2018; outer fjord (64.19666, -51.69) on 13/06/2018, and sub-tidal (64.19666, -51.69) on 13/06/2018 (outer fjord at 20-40cm below the lowest low water mark). The in situ collected inner and outer fjord intertidal animals with outer fjord subtidal animals used as controls were collected at 27 degree Celsius, 19 degree Celsius and 3 degree Celsius, respectively. Some of the outer fjord subtidal M. edulis were experimentally warmed to 22 degree Celsius and 32 degree Celsius for one hour to mimic high aerial exposure temperatures in the inner and outer fjord intertidal, respectively. RNA-Seq was performed on 5 animals for each treatment, with all subsequent bioinformatics analyses performed by Novogene, China.

Abstract:
Macrozooplankton and nekton were collected with a Rectangular Midwater Trawl 25 (RMT25) at locations within the Benguela Current region in May and June 2018. The work was carried out as part of the NERC Large Grant, COMICS (Controls on Mesopelagic Interior Carbon) on board the RRS Discovery (cruise DY090). Depth-discrete samples were collected across four time stations (BS1, BN1-3) between 0-750 m at intervals of 750-500m, 500-250m, 250-125m and 125-10 m. At each time station, two RMT25 hauls were deployed in the hours of darkness and two in daylight, with 16 deployments being undertaken overall. The RMT25 was operated via a downwire net monitor and was equipped with a flow meter, and temperature and salinity sensors. Nets in the deep strata (750-500m and 500-250m) were sampled for approximately 40 mins. and nets in the shallow strata (250-125m, 125-10m) for approximately 20mins. Catches were immediately sorted on board and identified to the lowest taxonomic level feasible. All fishes and subsamples of the other parts of the catch were retained (frozen), principally for subsequent biochemical and physiological analyses.
In total, 1917 fish were caught and preserved (not including Cyclothone spp.). Catches were dominated by the myctophids and various other mesopelagic fish species. The water column below 250m was dominated by Bathylagus spp. and genus Melamphidae spp. The most numerous fish overall were the Cyclothone spp. which occurred in large numbers below 500m. In deeper depth intervals (250m-750m), the macrozooplankton component of the RMT25 net catches was mostly dominated by Decapoda and hydromedusae of the genus Atolla spp.. Salps, smaller hydromedusa species and small euphausiids Euphausia hanseni and Nematocelis megalops dominated the shallower depths (10-250m).

Data were collected as part of the DiatomARCTIC project during the Multidisciplinary Arctic Program - Last Ice sampling campaign (82.576 N 62.471 W), 7-23 May, 2018. The bottom 10 cm of ice samples were collected during this time from neighbouring first-year and multi-year sea ice floes, from which the following parameters were determined: chlorophyll a, exopolymeric substances, ice algal taxonomic composition, oxygen-based net community production and bulk-ice nitrate, nitrite and phosphate concentrations. All samples were melted without dilution and were processed by K Campbell.

In 2008 RRS James Clark Ross investigated the marine benthic biodiversity in Amundsen Sea and in 2018 the marine benthic biodiversity of the Prince Gustav Channel (PGC) area and the macrobenthic cumacean fauna (Peracarida, Crustacea) collected by epibenthic sledge (EBS) has been assessed for species richness, abundance and assemblage composition. In total 4431 cumacean specimens assigned to 58 morphospecies and 5 families were identified. To set the cumacean dataset into a wider context, published cumacean species richness and abundance data from EBS collected stations in the Magellan Region and Southern Ocean (Rehm et al 2007, Muehlenhardt-Siegel 1999, Cordoba & San Vincente 2009) were added.
This dataset provides data for 1) Amundsen Sea and PGC EBS locations, 2) Amundsen Sea and PGC EBS cumacean abundances, 3) Magellan Region and Southern Ocean EBS cumacean standardised 1000 m trawl length abundances (175 - 3500 m depth).
